CONFRATA PROJECT - CONCILIATION'S WORK-FAMILY

WHAT

Starting from the characteristics of working organization in a television station (RTP) the project has 3 great objectives: to create a diagnostic study to identify the problems that broadcasting worker, to women and man must face to reconcile family work commitments to plan the implementation of new forms of working organisation in this undertaking venture (flexible hours, telework, short working week or part-time) to implement alternative custody of children (nanny and babysitter).

HOW MUCH

Support from Employment. Now which has covered 95% of the expenses. The project has been accomplished by a group of 3external experts and a coordinator and secretary, both officials of the RTP.

HOW

The first object (diagnostic study) has been achieved trough a questionnaire to all employees of the venture having children under 12 years of age or with disabled children.
The questionnaire has been submitted by experts, in all the national studies of T.V. (Lisbon, Porto, Madera, Acres).
The second objective (new forms of work organisation) was a form of "pilot experience" as they are still rare in Portugal.
The third objective - to implement alternative practices for the custody of children was achieved with a "borsa" (a Bank) for nanny/babysitter.

WHY

The difficulty to conciliate private life with professional life is one of the factors which affects the achievement of equality between man and women to take the requested commitment from the major professions in TV (workers, technicians and journalists). The difficulty of conciliation is aggravated by the lack of flexibility in working hours, from enormous need of this profession from the irreconcilable need of working hours of the normal child-care services.

RESULTS

The achievement of the "borsa" of nanny's and babysitters has contributed to the conciliation the improvement of the quality of life of the employees.
On the other hand, the opportunity to manage work commitments in a more flexible way, the more satisfying to the employees, that reflects in the attitude towards work, the family and management of free time. The fact that such experiences have been achieved in a great venture/enterprice , at the same time, is a public television station with a large viewing population which have contributed good publicity to the project, the capacity to survive a gearing down of great effect in the portugese public opinion than in other productive institutions and organizations.
