What
Equal Opportunities for Career Advisors
This course was a part of the WiTEC short course programme for women.
The courses were given in different counries.
This course mainly aimed at the participants' personal development and
at raising their understanding of the equality aspects in the guidance
process. The participants should be enabled to support non-traditional
career choices for women in a better way.
How much
The project was funded by the the European Commission and by national
(British) instituions, such as the Department of Trade and Indstry.
How
The participants were taught how the guidance process is influenced by
the cultural context and new opportunities in the technical labour market.
They could take part in seminars, attend lectures and workshops, but the
course was also taught in practical classes. For example, visits to engineering
departments or companies were arranged and even placements in an engineering
firm was possible.
By using those methods, the course wanted to provide information on new
opportunities for working in Europé, to identify and overcome stereotypes
and prejudices. Moreover, hands-on experience in engineering was gained
and the participants were provided with an opportunity to experience engineering
work and be associated with female trainees or women engineers who could
serve as possible role models. The course also tried to adapt the participants'
knowledge base and skills to recent technological and training advances
and to enhance therir knowledge of equal opportunities. Lastly, information
about the various education and training routes in engineering was provided.
Why
It is a well-known fact that women are still highly underrepresented in
the fields of science, engineering and technology. With the short course
programme WiTEC created one measure to overcome this imbalance.
All courses aimed at preparing women to face technological changes in
the labour market and to enhance their career development through increased
knowledge of new technologies.
Results
All participants were very satisfied with the outcomes of the course and
said that the konwledge they gained would be of great use for them. As
a conclusion it can therefore be stated that the course was highly successful.
