.

Recipe n.16

.

What

Assignment of an "Equality Mark" to the companies promoting equal opportunities within themselves.

The Office of the Equality Ombudsman of Helsinki regularly monitors the actions promoting Equal Opportunities performed by the bodies in charge of it.

How much

This action is part of the ordinary competences of the bodies in charge of promoting Equal Opportunities (Counsellors for equal opportunities at a regional, province, municipal level, Equal Opportunities Committees…). Therefore there are no direct costs.

How

The Ombudsman makes some "visits" to the local authorities and to the private companies in order to:

sensitise the managers, making them understand better the laws (esplanation of meaning, of the way how the text has to be interpreted…);

make statistics in order to monitor the degree of implementation of the Equal Opportunities Plan;

motivate the bodies in charge to implement the Plan, awarding them with an "Equality mark"

This activity could be performed, within the sicilian municipalities, in co-operation with the trade unions, in order to have, in each company, a contact who can guarantee the continuity of the action.

Why

This action is the consequence of a need for the enforcement of the law concerning the implementation of equal opportunities in the labour world.
In Our territory, this initiative is related to law n° 125/91 foreseeing the implementation of positive actions in order to have better conditions of organisation and distribution of work, to foster promotions, career and a better economical treatment for women, and to promote professional mainstreaming for women in those where they are under-represented.

Results

A real implementation of what is established by law in matters of equality.
Some incentives to companies and to the public administration in order to create good practices.
In the long term, the community a s a whole will benefit from the effects of a more equal work distribution both in the private and in the public sector.
