FEMILINGUA

What
The primary goal of FEMILINGUA programme is to promote equality between men and women, cultures, ages and social classes. In order to achieve this Turku Women´s Centre aims to carry out its activities in three languages (Finnish, Swedish and English), to activate women (Finnish and immigrants) to use their latent language skills and learn new languages and push all women to participate European co-operation.

FEMILINGUA means that in the all the meetings, educational events, celebration events, happenings etc. will be used all three languages (Finnish, Swedish and English). The child care of the events will also be arranged in all three languages. Also all information about Turku Women´s
Centre and its happenings will be produced in three languages.

How much

The project FEMILINGUA does not cost much, but it encourages multilingualism among women, to promote language using in intercultural relationships, encourages life long learning of languages regardless of age or background.

Why

In Finland language education is on a very high level (nearly all Finnish people have learned at least two foreign languages for several however people are too shy or unused to use foreign languages in everyday life. By using three languages in "normal" context the women are encouraged to use foreign languages and thus the language walls will be broken. In a safe atmosphere it is easier to use even minimal language without fear of becoming criticised.

Results

One of the basic ideas of the project is to get women´s experiences, knowledge and skills into the activity. The leader of the activity doesn´t give ready solutions in e.g. education, but tries to get people activated by different training sessions etc.In participating methods it is also important to go through emotions and feelings so that the handled issue becomes closer to everyone´s own experience and knowledge and so can be e.g.a start in assessing and changing attitudes. Also other people´s views will be better understood.
