Equal Opportunities in Sport

What
Integration of Equal Opportunities in all the sport programmes promoted by the Sport Department of the Municipal Chamber of Lisbon.
Ensuring a balanced participation of women and girls to facilities and to competitions.

How much
There are no direct costs.
Each year, within the framework of the expences destined to sport activities, a number of positive actions are scheduled, aimed to increase the number of women who can access the activities.
These positive actions, furthermore, should be diversified.

How
Mainstreaming actions for Equal Opportunities have a transversal trend, influencing all sport programs and projects. They will adopt a number of specific tools according to the methods, to the target groups and to the intervention areas.
This gave way to the following iniziatives:
Direct intervention at the level of both the image and the language used in all the material promoting and disseminating sport activities.
Promotion of the access for women to sport activities.
Analysis of costs/benefits according to gender issues. The Sport Department regularly analyses how the investments benefit in the same way the citizens of both sexes. This will be done through the analysis of the human and financial resources dedicated to sport programmes; of the opportunities of accessing the sports facilities; of the subsidies payed out in favour of the sport associations; and so on.
Signing agreement protocols with women NGOs in order to make joint actions about women and sports (seminars, projects, information material…) In prospect: incentives will be given to the Sports Societies which will stand out for their concrete Equal Opportunities policy.

Why
Even if the participation of women and girls from Lisbon to the sports activities is over the national average (39% vs 16%), this figure is always lower then the male participation rate. This inferiority is registered for every kind of sport, age, and social class.
Moreover, a disparity exists between women and men not only in terms of access to facilities, but also in terms of sports management (executives, referees, coaches…).
A decisive factor, eventually, was the acknowledgement of how a constant sport practice is not only healthy, but also contributes to build the assertiveness and the self-esteem of the subject.

Results
Sensitsation of the Associative Sports Movement to Equal Opportunities between Women and Men. A greater balance in the women's participation to the various sports activities and to all levels of sports professions.
